    ✨ About This Role

    You will design and stand up the optical measurement system that serves as our reference standard — a high-resolution imaging system able to resolve micron-scale displacement of a living biological surface, and to co-register that measurement with a second, independent sensing modality

    Responsibility 

    1-Design the optical components and imaging path — lenses, prisms, illumination — for a high-resolution surface-measurement system. 

    2-Assemble, align and validate the system to metrology-grade performance, with a defensible uncertainty budget. 

    3-Deliver Digital Image Correlation measurements of surface displacement on a living, moving, scattering target. 

    4-Establish co-registration with the second sensing modality, so both measure the same patch of surface in a common coordinate frame with quantified uncertainty. 

    5-Advise on the measurement trade space and tell us where our approach is weaker than the alternatives.

    Required :

    qualifications 5+ years optical engineering, with hands-on optical design — lenses, prisms, imaging paths — not solely camera integration. 

    Has built and aligned real optical systems, not only designed them on paper.

     A genuine metrology mindset: measurement uncertainty budgets, calibration, traceability, and the discipline to separate a resolution specification from an achieved uncertainty. 

    Optical design tools — Zemax / OpticStudio, Code V, or equivalent. Strongly preferred Digital Image Correlation specifically — ideally stereo or 3-D DIC. DIC is a distinct technique (speckle patterning, subset correlation, sub-pixel displacement), and we need out-of-plane displacement at the micron scale. 

    Command of the wider measurement trade space — DIC versus ESPI and holographic interferometry versus Laser Doppler Vibrometry. 

    We would rather hire someone who can argue the trade than someone who defaults to the technique they know. 

    Camera and sensor selection, high-speed imaging, sensor-noise budgeting. Illumination and speckle on biological surfaces, including biocompatibility constraints. 

    Telecentric imaging and the systematic errors it removes. Optomechanics — vibration isolation, mounting, thermal stability of an optical bench. In-vivo or biomedical optical measurement — living tissue is a hard, moving, scattering target.
